Minecraft 26.4 Snapshot Guide

Last updated: November 1, 2026

#Vanilla#26.4#Snapshots#Ice

Java 26.4 is still snapshots. Snapshot 6 added Snow Bricks and the Cold Sulfur Cube archetype. Snapshot 5 added Packed Ice Bricks. The stable release is still 26.3.

26.4 Is Not the Stable Release Yet

Java 26.3 Wilderness Bound, released September 15, 2026, is still Latest Release. 26.4 is a snapshot line. Snapshot 5 shipped October 20. Snapshot 6 shipped October 27.

Snapshots can corrupt worlds. Install them from the launcher Installations tab with snapshots enabled, and keep the test world in its own folder. Do not open your main SMP or Realm on a snapshot.

Brittle Ice

Snapshot 4 added Brittle Ice. It generates in ice caves as part of the crevasse. Step on it and it cracks, then breaks. Frostbites can walk it without breaking it. Everyone else should treat it like a trap floor.

Silk Touch picks it up. You can also make it: water that sits against Blue Ice horizontally turns into Brittle Ice. Ice, Frosted Ice, and Brittle Ice no longer draw their inside faces when they touch, so ice builds look solid.

Zombies, drowned, and husks are immune to freezing in this snapshot. A drowned in powder snow becomes a zombie before it can become a Frostbite.

Jukebox Playlists

Put a single chest, trapped chest, or any copper chest directly above a jukebox. Music discs in that chest play in slot order. Empty slots and other items are skipped. When a disc ends, the jukebox swaps it for the next disc and loops back to the start.

If the chest has no discs, the disc already in the jukebox repeats. Ejecting the current disc skips ahead. A double chest is not the playlist โ€” Snapshot 5 even fixed bugs where a chest that became double, or stopped being double, confused the jukebox. Use one chest.

Packed Ice Bricks

Snapshot 5 added Packed Ice Bricks. Craft them as a 2x2 of Packed Ice. Slabs, stairs, walls, and chiseled Packed Ice exist, and the stonecutter cuts the slab, stair, wall, and chiseled variants.

Packed Ice Bricks and chiseled Packed Ice use the fast-sliding sulfur-cube archetype, so they still feel like ice underfoot. Use them for cold bases and ice boats. They are a building block, not a weapon.

Snow Bricks

Snapshot 6 added Snow Bricks. Craft them as a 2x2 of Snow Blocks. Slabs, stairs, and walls exist, but you cannot stonecutter them โ€” craft each shape at the table.

Snow Bricks use the fast-sliding sulfur-cube archetype like Packed Ice Bricks. They only drop when mined with a shovel, so use Silk Touch or accept losing the block if you dig with the wrong tool.

Pair Snow Bricks with Packed Ice Bricks for layered winter bases. They are decorative and movement tech, not combat items.

Cold Sulfur Cube Archetype

Snapshot 6 added the Cold Sulfur Cube archetype. It slides like the fast-sliding family, but it floats and leaves a Frost Walker-style disk of Frosted Ice on water below when it moves โ€” if there is air above the water and the cube started on ground.

Blue Ice blocks absorbed by a sulfur cube can pick up this archetype. Test it on a shallow pond before you build a whole ice-boat highway. The frosted trail is pretty, but it melts on its own schedule.

What Goes Around Comes Around

The Adventure advancement from Snapshot 5 is 'What Goes Around Comes Around': kill a Frostbite with an Ice Ball.

Frostbites are the cold-variant mob from this year's ice work. Ice Balls are their projectile. You need the kill credit on an Ice Ball, not a sword cleanup. Fight one in an ice cave, bait the shot, and return it. Brittle Ice in the same caves will break under you if you stand still, so keep moving between throws.

Ice Ambience and the DXGI Option

Regular ice can now play an ambient sound when it has at least eight ice blocks around it horizontally, air above, and water below. A flat ice platform over water is enough to hear it. Packed ice, blue ice, and frosted ice also got their own place sounds in Snapshot 4.

Windows has an experimental video setting, Prefer DXGI Present. It is off by default and not every GPU supports it. Mojang's notes say it can help IME input, variable refresh rate, and alt-tab from fullscreen. Leave it off if the game stutters after you enable it.

Install Snapshot 6 Without Breaking 26.3

Launcher โ†’ Installations โ†’ New โ†’ enable snapshots โ†’ pick the latest 26.4 snapshot. Give it a separate game directory.

Create a new world for ice caves and snow builds. If you must look at an old world, copy it first. Resource packs need pack format 101.0 on Snapshot 6, and data packs need 125.1. A 26.3 pack will not load cleanly.

When 26.4 becomes a full drop, this page's stable-versus-snapshot warning will change. Until the launcher calls it Latest Release, Wilderness Bound is the version to play on a real world.
